Saving Network Rail thousands of pounds
– and saving a few pigeons too!

GLS 100R® Specialist Rail Coatings

Pigeons were flying between the Overhead Line Equipment (OLE) and the steelwork of the footbridge over Platforms 4 & 5 at York Station. The 25,000 Volt current was arcing through the birds and shorting the line at a cost of thousands of pounds – and killing the birds.

Following GLS Coatings' success with coating all of the Signalling Location Cases in the public domain for Wessex Route, we were approached by Senior NWR staff to enquire whether our GLS 100R® Electrically Insulating Coating would insulate infrastructure to withstand the 25,000 Volts which the OLE carries.

After trials over many months, GLS Coatings Ltd developed an enhanced GLS 100R® which was independently tested and verified to withstand 35,000 Volts.

So in the early hours of an icy December 2014, a team of GLS Coatings' PTS-trained Technicians began work coating and insulating the steelwork of the footbridge over Platform 4 with GLS 100R®.

Work began at 02:24, giving the team only 3½ hours to complete the work. Working from a MEWP, and kitted out in full PPE, Andy Evans and Graham Jones first diamond-ground the steelwork to remove decades of grime from the trains passing beneath the bridge. Next, a thorough chemical wipe was applied to the steelwork. With just 1½ hours until the 6am deadline, Andy and Graham began spray-applying GLS 100R® Electrically Insulating Coating to the bridge. And with less than 9 minutes to spare, the job was done and everything was packed away. Only GLS 100R®, which is TOUCH-DRY IN UNDER 10 SECONDS, could have achieved this.

The team returned to York Station in January 2015 to complete the work – coating the steelwork of the footbridge over Platform 5 with GLS 100R® Electrically Insulating Coating.

It is almost six months since the work was carried out – saving Network Rail hundreds of thousands of pounds – not to mention saving the lives of the many pigeons who would have perished, without the application of GLS 100R®!

As a visitor to Railtex 2015 in Birmingham observed, we should be looking for recognition from the World Wildlife Fund for our services to wildlife!
